Codec 0x2000 Dolby Ac3 Ac3 File

Under XP I use *.m2v files (mpeg2) and their audio in a separate file *.ac3 (Doldy digital) and play back is 100% with audio. Under Windows 7 I do the same thing but Quicktime does not play back the ac3 audio (video is perfect). A_AC3 is AC-3 (Dolby Digital) Audio, “A” meaning an audio stream. S_TEXT/UTF8 is UTF Plain Text subtitles, “S” meaning a subtitle stream. Every “A_AC3” file I have plays fine.

Thor Broadcast Compact Modulator (CMOD) with Dolby AC/3

Dolby Ac3 Codec

Thor H-AC3-CMOD series units are part of the popular CMOD series of digital HDTV encoder modulator systems formally known as VQAM. Like all CMOD systems, this platform is available in three versions for use with over 95% of the worlds broadband TV systems. Advances in technology have reduced component size to the scale that Thor can now integrate every system and component necessary for a digital HDTV headend into a single handheld unit. CMOD systems are combination devices that bundle a real time MPEG hardware encoder, DTV transport stream generator, and agile RF frequency modulator in a single enclosure. Any HDMI live video source can now be converted to an open TV channel for insertion and distribution over cable & antenna TV coax systems. The generated program can be viewed natively on any television set with its built in tuner.

CMOD series units with model numbers including 'AC3' indicate that the encoding system includes a licensed Dolby AC/3 audio encoding chip. This is a new feature on Thor equipment, and allows our modulators to be used in a much wider range of application, especially in the United States. When US broadcasters and the FCC came together to establish standards for digital video broadcast; the decision makers were heavily influenced by lobbyists from the worlds largest manufactures. Special interest groups succeeded in designing the first DTV systems around proprietary codecs, such as AC/3 audio. After years of working with Intel, Thor is pleased to announce that official licensed Dolby AC/3 audio chips are now available in most encoder lines. This allows channels generated with a Thor CMOD to be viewed on any strict standards tuner; such as a Motorola or Scientific Atlanta set top box. If you are unsure about what standards and protocols you require, please contact a sales engineer prior to purchase.

Available in three channel formats: QAM, ATSC, & DVB-T

All models in the CMOD modulators can be ordered for generating channels in one of three formats. By supporting these three main types of digital HDTV channels, Thor systems can be used with over 95% of televisions and digital tuners in the world. All H-AC3-CMOD systems have the same hardware, but the firmware required to change the output type is difficult to modify by the end user. This is why we ask that customers specify the type of digital TV channel they need at the time of ordering. The default configuration is for QAM modulation. This covers the most tuners by supporting all three ITU-J83 annex standards. This means that an H-AC3-CMOD-QAM system can be used for both US cable systems (J.83B) and for DVB-C world TV systems (J.83A). For United States free to air format we offer an ATSC compatible version that modulates a 19Mbps 8VSB carrier. The model number H-AC3-CMOD-ATSC indicates that the unit will ship with the US OTA software. This firmware also provides all the PSIP tables necessary for electronic program guide and channel information. For everyone else a DVB-T version is provided. All NIT tables are configurable, and the output conforms to DVB-T terrestrial broadcasting standards. Below is a table with the currently available options.

Model Line Overview

Ac3 Audio Codec

This is the standard line of CMOD compact modulators for lowest cost generation of cable or terrestrial tv channels from video sources. These modulators dramatically simplify and expand the possibilities of traditional video distribution systems. These systems become more cost effective as the number of screens increases. This is the opposite of traditional video distribution systems that increase in cost in direct proportion to the number of displays in the system. With RF channel modulation, hundreds of unique full HD video signals can be combined on inexpensive coax cable. Every channel is available at all times to every display, with almost zero delay in changing video channels. Digital modulators are ideal for installations like bars and restaurants with multiple displays. A Thor Broadcast modulator allows distribution of any single HDMI video source to an unlimited number of display devices via simple antenna or cable TV coax cable. To add additional displays all that is needed are low cost cable TV or antenna amplifiers, passive splitters, and low cost generic coax. This is a game changer for sports bar television system installations. Imagine the possibilities of needing only a single HDMI feed to broadcast your own local cable channel that can be viewed without a a cable box on any TV. This line of CMOD systems also supports licensed Dolby AC/3 audio codec for expanded compatibility with generic cable set top boxes and all USA televisions. Models including AC3 provide the legacy support for older digital systems that only support early ATSC equipment that is not compatible with the MPEG established world audio codecs. If you are unsure if you need this option, contact a Thor sales representative for a free system design consultation.
